The Dutchland Foods Story: Over 30 Years Of Excellence

At Dutchland Foods, our foundation has always been built on family, faith, and a strong work ethic. Our story began in Lester, Iowa, a small Midwest town recognized for its welcoming community. On October 28, 1992, Pete and Susan Van Wyhe, together with their family, opened our doors and set out to create something special. Over thirty years later, our commitment to quality remains as strong as ever, thanks to the dedication of our entire team. We invite you to join us as we reflect on the milestones that have shaped Dutchland Foods into the company we are today.

Humble Beginnings: The Braided Danish

From humble beginnings, Pete and Susan Van Wyhe started Dutchland Foods with the help of Pete’s parents, Wayne and Jennie. The journey began in the fall of 1992 when the family converted a former bank building into a full-fledged frozen pastry production facility. This original location gave birth to Dutchland Foods’ first-ever frozen ready-to-bake pastry, the Braided Danish. These hand-braided pastries featured a variety of delightfully sweet flavors and quickly became a hit. The scent of sweet dough filled the air as the family worked side by side to create something truly special. Sales quickly grew as word spread, and the demand for the danishes took off. Before long, Dutchland Foods outgrew the Main Street bank location. In July 2003, we expanded into a stunning addition, built with current needs and potential future growth in mind.

Introducing the Pastry Puffin

Thanks to the new production space, an exciting new product was created and added to the Dutchland Foods lineup in 2005. After countless taste tests and exploration, Pastry Puffins launched to the fundraising market in the fall of 2006. These handcrafted treats are a flaky puff pastry filled with fruit and sweet fillings, finished with sugar crystals. Pastry Puffins quickly became a family favorite in our area and beyond. This product also showcased the artisanal, from-scratch quality Dutchland Foods could offer, paving the way to future developments.

Entering the Wholesale Market With Dutchland Classic Pastries

In 2008, Dutchland Foods made a huge shift to focus on upscale wholesale products. The Dutchland Classic Pastry brand was created after much recognition from bakery chefs. The idea was to enter the wholesale market with unique creations and undeniable quality. At the same time, we made the bittersweet decision to discontinue the braided pastry line. Moving away from this beloved family recipe was not easy, but the Van Wyhes took a leap of faith to bring our artisanal pastries to a wider audience. The shift saw huge growth for the business and team. We recognized how important it was to adapt to the customers' wants, so we invested in new tools and technology to bring their custom pastries to life. The Dutchland Classic Pastry brand combined artisanal craft and modern innovation, and the brand continues to grow and evolve based on those same principles today.

Scaling & Adapting

As Dutchland Classic Pastries grew in the wholesale market, a cutting-edge washroom was added to facilitate cleaning of equipment and dishes. A 12,000-square-foot building was also constructed dedicated to production, freezer storage, and dry storage. These expansions have allowed us to make room for more hands and larger machinery, and have given us the ability to scale up production without losing the scratch-made touch. In 2019, after taking every step possible to ensure food safety, we obtained a BRC AA Food Safety rating. Since our first certification, Dutchland Foods has continued to uphold the highest recognized food safety ratings, and we just recertified with an AA rating. This certification aligns with our uncompromising commitment to protecting the quality of our food and our team.

Pappy’s Pie Dough

In 2022, we entered the grocery sector by acquiring Pappy’s Pie Dough. Boasting a heritage that reaches back to 1966, Pappy’s is an award-winning premade dough that captures the authentic taste of a homemade crust. We take great satisfaction in being one of the few US-based manufacturers producing a genuine lard-based pie dough. Pie crust made with lard brings the nostalgia of grandma’s baking back into our customers’ homes.
